EMF 2004-2022 Dodge Ram intermediate steering shaft bushing Installation
Переглядів 6 тис.5 місяців тому
Does your Dodge Ram have steering wander? As the truck ages, the bushing inside the intermediate steering shaft (located near the gas pedal on 2004 Ram trucks) starts to break down and causes the pin to shift inside the shaft from side to side leading to steering wander. EMF was the first company to design a small Aluminum bushing that presses into the steering shaft to remove that play. You ca...
Why it's important to rotate your tires after installing new Ball Joints

Reason #1,367 of why your truck may wander after installing new ball joints. It's very important to rotate your tires after changing out worn out ball joints because it changes the way your tire sits on the road and if you don't rotate the tires from the back to the front, you're gonna have wander or possibly even death wobble and you're going to think it's the new ball joints, but it's just yo...

Dodge Ram Trucks have issues with Bad Knuckles leading to memory steer and stiff steering. This can cause premature failure of the ball joints. In this video, we demonstrate a bad knuckle and how EMF has come up with a fix using our Stage 2 Stiff Pin and Race for the upper ball joint so you don't have to replace your knuckle with a new one (if you can find a new knuckle, that is!)

    My problem in my '96 Dodge is the frame joint of the track bar is wallowed out, so I can move the whole cab about 1-2" by turning the steering wheel with it stationary. Definitely need to swap that out before taking it on the highway. Good to know about this steering joint, though!

    Not sure if you’ll see this, but getting some real mixed messages here I think. I reached out years ago about getting the EMF joints for my synergy linkage as there was someone on the forums pushing that you had an unofficial upgrade kit and then was told that after months of being almost ready you changed your mind and weren’t working on it. Then I see about a year ago that people were still getting the kits. I noticed a while back you stopped making these parts altogether per the website but then see this video which contradicts your website. Feel really sour that I was told kits that were not being made anymore were then still being sold it appears despite the fact I was told tough luck.

    I recently had my truck on a lift doing brakes so i thought id check the play ( have your joints installed ). Passenger wheel i could just barely feel a rocking sensation when grabbing tire by hand. Driver side i couldnt feel. Should i tighten that side or just grease it? I grease them often about 2x each over 20k miles.

    "I also don't have BJ boots on mine" Huh? I *know* you guys aren't in sunny California... Is that just because that's a yard truck?

    • @EMFEVO
      @EMFEVO 4 місяці тому

      The ball joints that Sky has on that truck were literally pieced together using raw steel "unperfect blems" that were thrown in the scrap bin. Basically they didn't pass our Quality inspection to sell (we have very little tolerances that we allow on our products so if it's 0.0001 out, we toss it), but they were still "good enough" to test with. We like to do a lot of testing here, to see how the parts hold up when there are different factors taken into consideration. In his case, he also has bad knuckles because it's a 2006 and those are some of the worst knuckles to come out of Dodge's manufacturing facilities. So he put those parts in with no boots to see how they hold up with just grease. The bad knuckle of course was an issue and he had stiff steering the whole time but he's a trooper and wanted to do it for our R&D process so he ran those to see what the internals would look like after driving on them using raw, uncoated, non-nitrided 4140 HTSR steel.

    So usually how many km’s before a rebuild? I’d say I’m 50% gravel roads and 50% pavement. With about 2500lbs in the back at all times.

    • @EMFEVO
      @EMFEVO 4 місяці тому

      It's hard to say - we also drive about 50% gravel every day. We keep ours greased at all times, that is the key to having these last the longest. We have seen oilfield and welding trucks go about 300,000 kms (186,000 mi) before needing a rebuild. We are at 240,000 kms (150,000 mi) and we haven't rebuilt ours in the 2003 3500 dually. If you have a stiff knuckle issue and don't fix it with a different upper pin and race (or a whole new knuckle), they require more grease intervals and they wear out faster so you could be rebuilding around 200,000 kms (125,000 mi) or as little as 60,000- 100,000 kms (37,000-62,000 mi) if you have really bad knuckles. It all comes down to checking the stiffness of the knuckle after ball joint install and before greasing to make sure the knuckle moves freely back and forth (we have another youtube video on this all about stiff knuckles if you want to watch) ua-cam.com/video/bpyPSTvOtyI/v-deo.html If you have a nice free knuckle and keep the ball joints greased you could get probably up to 400,000 kms (248,000 mi) out of them before a rebuild is needed.

    • @fztfabs65
      @fztfabs65 4 місяці тому

      @@EMFEVO okay, yeah maintenance is everything. I’m greasing every 5000km, I was just curious.

  • @guhusslin

    What kind of grease should I use after this ?

    • @EMFEVO
      @EMFEVO 4 місяці тому

      Great question ,Sky! We like to use a grease with a 5% moly in it. It is usually black in colour and thick. Any high-impact bearing grease works well. Because we are in canada we have a climate that can go from super cold to super hot so we prefer a synthetic grease for our conditions. Any grease is better than no grease but some work better than others. For longest lasting parts, we recommend topping off the grease at every oil change. Premature wear of parts is almost always attributed to a lack of grease.

    I need to replace my 3rd gen steering box. Do you have one you recommend, and will it stop death wobble?

    • @EMFEVO
      @EMFEVO 5 місяців тому

      It probably won't solve death wobble. Theres a multi million dollar industry selling parts to stop death wobble. As far as I know, no box manufacturer has adressed the issue yet. We've had really good luck with Cancraft as far as boxes go. We dont run steering stabilizers and have found death wobble is one of the following -trac bar bushing -sloppy drag link -loose pitman arm -bad axle u joint - a bent or warped rim . If you didnt have death wobble and you rotated the tires ,then suddenly get it. Check the tires Just because a tire has been balanced doesnt mean it can't cause it. look for excessive weights on the tire. -a bad tire, hey lets face it, manufacturing has gone down hill, new tires can cause just as much problem as old tires. - poorly worn tires This comes from -bad ball joints. Brand new OEM ball jopints will wear a tire in 10 km to the point they can cause wobble. Make sure you rotate your tires. -bad tie rod ends -shocks -not rotating the tires -a bunch of other small things - a soft intermediate shaft bushing -worn control arm bushings (usually needs something else as well) - in my case a broken rear leaf with bad tires (not rotated in 40 km ) and a bad u joint There's more, but anything i didnt mention needs at least two or three other things compunding to set it off. A steering stabalizer helps slow it down and prevent it. However it also covers up something that is wrong. Now cue in "my box brace fixed it" If a box brace fixed your death wobble and made your truck "steer" better, it's because it was incorrectly installed. It's pushing upwards on the sector shaft and causing memory. While it's creating memory, which prevents the hydraulic flutter and wander, its also causing lash bind in the box. This takes out the bearings on the shaft and strains the pump. It also causes leaks. A box brace should only prevernt side load on the shaft. Correctly installed you should never even know it was installed. Unfortunatly few people know how to properly install them, then brag to everyone about how much better it steers. It's called memory from bind. I'll do a video on this.
